I met Allan once. He never knew how much he taught me in those few moments. I had just recorded one of the highest scores that IBM had ever seen in their aptitude test, and was thinking of a job with IBM.

He gave me some personal advice.

  • Every employee is a salesperson.
  • Don't think of joining IBM Australia without an honours degree. Or a pass degree in Mathematics is acceptable, but any honours degree at all is preferable.
  • Don't even think of any career in IT (we called it EDP in those days) unless you can work for someone younger than yourself, and unless you can work for a woman, and unless you can work for a woman younger than yourself.

All good advice IMO. I never did join IBM although I did complete a Maths major, but I was already in love with Mathematics, and the other two have been foundational.

His best

But what he later told a public IBM Australia AGM was even more formative... May not be word-perfect...

I have never been convinced that the progress of humanity has been achieved by corporations or even by nations. It has been achieved by highly motivated individuals who had a clear idea of what they wanted to achieve.

RIP Allan. Good innings.
