Free viewers from Microsoft for Microsoft Office files

From time to time Microsoft offers free, freely distributable viewers for its proprietry file formats.

If you are archiving files in these formats, you should include these viewers with the archive. These don't guarantee that your files will be readable in the future, as there's still the question of a machine and operating system able to run the viewer program. But they can't hurt.

The current version of the Word viewer supports XP and similar age systems. You can download it from Microsoft.

If you have Win98 or earlier, you can try the Word97 version avalable here.
