The accident record

Part of the nuclear homework project and a page of energy issues

The accident record of the PWR is remarkably good. One serious accident, at Three Mile Island of course. Gross mismanagement. Reactor an expensive write off.

Core meltdown did not even escape the reactor vessel. Containment was there and unneeded. You could safely walk around inside the containment soon after the accident. Nobody got hurt.

I know that's not what you've been told. See the Linear No Thought Model and Some nukes are better than others.

And even with the RBMK accident at Chernobyl and the BWR accidents at SL-1 and Fukushima the record is still surprisingly good. Far safer than fossil fuel. Far safer both to the workers in the industry and to the public outside the boundary fence. And again, that's probably not what you've been told.
