The secrecy argument regarding the JFK shooting

Page history last edited by Andrew Alder 2 years, 11 months ago

A page on the JFK shooting

What it is

When discussing the JFK shooting, a frequent argument is something along the lines of:

I don't believe that could be kept secret for this long

This argument is raised in dismissing both conspiracy theories and theories about who shot who and when, such as the one put forward by Howard Donahue that has so impressed me. (And which is not a conspiracy theory, just BTW.)

What is wrong with it

What this argument ignores is that there is much that is still being kept secret. We do know that there was a cover-up of some sort after the shooting (and that this was itself a crime, just BTW).

But we do not know who was responsible for it or why they did it. We do not know what they were covering up. All of this has been kept secret, and it's wise to assume that there are those still actively working to keep it secret. (And that is also a crime, just BTW.)

Surely that is equally incredible? That such secrets should be kept for so long? But that is what is happening. And we know that it is.

...and why it matters

It is about time that whatever this cover-up is covering up was revealed. It is in the interests of the many innocent parties most affected, such as the families of those involved. It is in the interests of the Secret Service, who need to move on. It is in the interests of the American people, who likewise need closure, rather than a festering wound of distrust of their government. And it is in the interests of the world. For all their faults, the USA is the most benevolent superpower in history.

To confuse the Donahue/Menninger proposal with theories as to whether (or not) Oswald acted alone is helping the continuing cover-up. It is different. It's just about who shot who, based on ballistics evidence, compiled by someone competent and so far, unchallenged by anyone competent.
