anger

In today's postmodern world, anger is not very fashionable. Particularly in churches, thw word has a very negative connotation.

And certainly, anger can be very destructive, and is not welcome in many societies, not just our own. But that, I wish to suggest, is not the whole story.

I think there are three or four different things that we might call anger, and that expressing some of them is not only acceptable, but a very good thing, and even something that we can recognise as being sadly missing from our worship.

This topic was inspired by Walter Brueggemann's Introduction to the Old Testament, which I've been reading. I'm up to Psalms, and Brueggemann makes two observations:

  • About a third of the Psalms are laments.

  • We don't often use these laments in our worship.
