carbon monoxide

One of the more common topics on Quora is advice on adjusting gas burners, furnaces, regulators, etc..

Some of the questions there scare me, and some of the answers scare me even more.

Carbon monoxide is tasteless, odourless, colourless, and poisonous.

It is a component of old-style town gas which was a mixture of producer gas and water gas, and part of the reason for tagging that gas with something smelly so leaks would be a bit more obvious and less likely to be ignored.

But the nastiest thing about carbon monoxide is that in a poorly ventilated room containing a flueless heater or cooker, as the oxygen level drops the burner will produce carbon monoxide. So you have a double whammy. The lack of oxygen can kill you, as can the carbon monoxide, but the combination kills even quicker.

And kill it does, regularly. Sometimes individuals and sometimes whole family groups. And even in a well ventilated room a poorly adjusted burner, or one running on the wrong fuel, can produce carbon monoxide.

Please take care. The life you save may be your own. And even if you are not the one who dies you may wish you had been, rather than someone you loved.
