the Letters to the Corinthians

We know that 1 Corinthians is not the first letter Paul wrote to the church in Corinth. But what became of the previous letter or letters? Surely the church did not discard it?

One theory is that the previous letter is part of 2 Corinthians. Roy L. Smith in his 1944 commentary Know Your Bible Series: Sudy Number 6: Paul Launches The New Testament proposes the following scenario:

Paul's first letter: 2 Corinthians 6:14 - 7:1

Paul's second letter: 1 Corinthians

Paul's third letter: 2 Corinthians 10-13

Paul's fourth letter: 2 Corinthians 1:1-6:13, 7:2-9:15
