the Blood of Jesus

Page history last edited by Andrew Alder 3 years, 8 months ago

a page of theology and probably also an unpopular essay

I have just heard a friend praying in a way that I have often heard before, and which I think God finds not just disappointing but rather offensive.

They listed what was wrong with their world and their life, the challenges they face, and also listed the ways in which they wanted God to fix things. This is disappointingly common. I think it was best put by whoever said Don't tell God how big your storm is, tell your storm how big God is.

But that's not the offensive part. They then continued to say we cover these things with the blood of Jesus.

Ouch. The Blood of Jesus is the most precious thing in the universe, and when we splash it around like this I think it's really offensive to God. It's not a magic potion.

The Blood of Jesus was shed for the forgiveness of sins. It is what makes our repentance so effective. And that is very special.

And to invoke it for other purposes robs it of its power in our lives. And it is hard to think of a greater tragedy than that.
