genuinely biodegradable

Page history last edited by Andrew Alder 2 years, 6 months ago

A page on other environmental issues and one of my hobbyhorses but perhaps not an unpopular essay. Or it shouldn't be.

In Australia you can buy plastic items, particularly garbage disposal bags, that are "biodegradable". Sounds a good idea. People pay a little more for such products so they won't add to plastic_pollution.

The problem is they do, because they're not.

Genuinely biodegradable bags are also sold and are not a lot more expensive if at all. They are labelled "compostable". But why would you buy a "compostable" bag when what you want is a biodegradable one? So people who would happily pay more for a biodegradable bag (if it was) are paying more for a bag that is at least as polluting as an ordinary one. Probably a bit more so, owing to the little bit of extra energy used in making this stuff, and the extra difficulty in eventually cleaning up the mess.

Are you happy with this? If so it seems to me it's for one of two reasons. You may be stark raving bonkers. Or you may be one of the many people pocketing the money this fraud makes.

Watch this space, or see my older effort at plastic bag rubbish
